Intersection of George Street and Hilliard Street

What's Happening:
The City of Peterborough is undertaking a signalized intersection improvement project for the intersection of George Street and Hilliard Street, along with implementation of trail lighting and various other amenities along approximately 1.35 kilometres of trail leading from the George Street/Hilliard Street intersection to Bethune Street. The trail lighting scope included in this project is being completed with support from the Federal Active Transportation Fund, which is designed to enhance active transportation networks.

The George Street/Hilliard Street intersection improvements will include:

  • Realignment of the southbound approach to the intersection from Water Street/George Street.
  • Installation of traffic signals to accommodate trail users to cross the intersection with dedicated crossings.
  • Improvements to the Rotary Greenway Trail approaches to the intersection.
  • Improvements to accessibility for the intersection including audible pedestrian push buttons and tactile approaches to the intersection.

The Rotary Greenway Trail lighting implementation between Bethune Street and Hilliard Street will improve the trail for users of all ages and abilities, making the trail a higher functioning and more efficient key north-south crosstown route. The lighting implementation will improve a key trail link between downtown, surrounding neighbourhoods, a secondary school and Trent University. Also included in this project will be trail pavement markings, and additional signage on the trail throughout the project area.

Schedule:
This project is planned to be constructed entirely in 2025, with utility relocations occurring in 2024.
Please note that the scheduling details outlined above are only estimates, pending budget approvals and could be subject to change.

We encourage you to provide your input and feedback through the Questions section found at the bottom of this page, along with input we are seeking on locations of various amenities along the trail using the Map tool. Your feedback is valuable in ensuring the improvements are suited to the needs of the community. Please know that we value your feedback, and though we will review and consider all input we receive, changes to the project based on community input will only be made where deemed feasible by the project team.

What's Next?
All input and feedback will be reviewed and considered by the project team and incorporated into the detailed design if possible.

Updates:
