Did you know?
Do you know why the City needs to replace Fire Station 2?
The existing Fire Station 2, built in 1967, is no longer able to meet the current standards for operations. Peterborough Fire Services have been planning for a new Fire Station 2 for many years.
Do you know why Fire Station 2 needs to relocate to a new site?
There are two main reasons for the fire station relocation:
- the existing site is not large enough to accommodate a new building of a size and design that meets the current standards for operations
- due to the growth of the City in recent years the current location is not in an optimum location for maximizing response times.
Did you know there are several steps in deciding a new location?
Step 1 - In this initial step the primary focus of the location search is to consider emergency response times, applicable legislation, industry guidelines and standards. This step in the study was conducted in consideration of the applicable legislation including the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997 (F.P.P.A.), the Occupational Health and Safety Act, R.S.O. 1990 (O.H.S.A.), industry guidelines as authored by the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (O.F.M.E.M.), industry standards as authored by the National Fire Protection Association (N.F.P.A.)
Step 2 – A deeper look at the potential sites that were ranked highest in Step 1 will consider factors beyond emergency response times. This includes a closer look at the characteristics of each site, stakeholder engagement and City inter-departmental review.
Step 3 – Community Engagement - A Fire Station is an important part of the community, the survey for community input is an important step in the process.
Step 4 – Once all information is gathered and considered, a final location will be selected.
Did you know there are plans for a Fire Station 4?
Although the City is busy working on the best location for Fire Station 2 work has also done to consider a longer term plan for a future Fire Station 4. GIS modelling was used to study two future options for Fire Station 4, one in the West and one in the East. Ultimately the results of this portion of the study highlighted a future station 4 in the City’s East section would provide a maximized response network.
