The City of Peterborough is inviting residents to provide their feedback on the City's annual Canada Day celebration that is facilitated by Recreation and Parks Services Division staff. Have your say by completing the survey and share your ideas on how you feel the community should celebrate Canada Day in 2025.

Traditionally, the Canada Day celebration consists of the following:

  • 10 a.m. - noon - Pre-Parade Activities in Confederation Square and at City Hall that include face painting, family-orientated games, bike decorating contest, musical entertainment, and refreshments. Typically 300-400 people attend these activities.
  • 11:30 a.m. - Land acknowledgement, speeches and the singing of "O Canada".
  • Noon - Parade begins and travels down George Street.
  • 9:30 p.m. - The annual fireworks display which follows the Musicfest concert at Del Crary Park where thousands of people attend and watch the display over Little Lake.

Background Information

Council endorsed continuing with providing the traditional Canada Day event with a parade in 2024 and asked for a staff report to Council later in 2024 with an overview of the 2024 event and provide recommendations as to how to proceed for Canada Day celebrations in 2025.

There were 27 float entries in 2024, 25 in 2023, 21 in 2022, and 16 floats participated in 2019. The parade was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the relatively low interest in parade entries, staff were considering a family-friendly event in local parks that would provide activities and fun for several hours throughout the day as an alternative to the parade.

The City of Peterborough organizes a Canada Day parade along with pre-parade activities, sponsors the Canada Day concert organized by Musicfest at Del Crary Park, and puts on the annual Canada Day fireworks display.

As the City begins to consider planning for the 2025 Canada Day celebrations, it is asking the community how it would like to celebrate Canada Day – what type of activities residents would like to see as part of the celebration.

Feedback collected through this survey will help inform recommendations for City Council for the 2025 Canada Day celebration.
