Bird Friendly Peterborough: Official City Bird Contest
On June 27, City Council ratified the application from Bird Friendly Peterborough (BFP), a community group made up of representatives from local nature-focused organizations, designating Peterborough as being bird-friendly through the Bird Friendly City (BFC) program. Nature Canada oversees the BFC program, which requires communities to meet multiple criteria before achieving bird-friendly city status. The BFP team identified Peterborough as meeting the entry-level requirements of the BFC program through existing City policies and community programs.
To celebrate Peterborough earning entry-level BFC status, an official city bird contest is being held for residents to make their selection for the bird that best represents our community. A list of 16 local bird species has been assembled by BFP that comprises a wide variety of common species. The contest will be held from August 2 to September 5 to narrow the list to the top 5 bird species. The winning city bird will be announced at the inaugural Peterborough Environmental and Climate Action Expo at Ecology Park on September 23.
